Personal Fitness & Rehabilitation’s (PFR) Approach to Metabolism Optimization

Metabolism Testing

We’ve stated each treatment is highly personalized based on metabolism, body composition and health profile. How can we do that for each patient? The answer is simple. Cardio Coach. Cardio Coach allows us to assess your lifestyle and activity and to compare your metabolism rate to your current caloric intake. Stop guessing and learn more about Resting Metabolic Rate and VO2 Testing right here!
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is used to measure your body’s process of converting food (calories) into energy. The efficiency with which your body does this is referred to as your metabolic rate. While VO2 Testing is used to set training zones by revealing your optimal exercise level to BURN FAT. Don’t work harder. Work smarter. So you don’t get hurt or push yourself beyond limits!

There is one basic truth to weight loss: You need to burn more than you eat. Target Metabolic Zones tell you exactly how to do that. The following results of your test show you precisely how many calories your body actually burns, and calculates how many calories you should eat to lose or maintain your weight. Let PFR help you know your numbers.

METABOLIC RATE TESTING

What is a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Test?

Metabolism is the process of converting food (calories) into energy. The efficiency with which your body does this is referred to as your metabolic rate. Many factors affect a person’s metabolic rate: weight, age, body composition, hormone levels, and gender making it a highly unique number.

Why Test your Metabolic Rate?

Understanding your body’s unique metabolic rate will allow your practitioner to customize your weight loss or maintenance program around your needs.

  • It can screen for a slowed metabolism that may explain frustrated attempts
to lose weight in the past.
  • It can reveal changes in your metabolism during the weight loss process
that can help trouble shoot a frustrating plateau.
  • Once you reach your goal, an RMR measurement can give you the precise
caloric prescription for maintenance to help you sustain that goal weight.

How does the test work?

KORR Metabolic Analyzers utilize the same technology as ICU metabolic testing. Because every calorie a person consumes requires a fixed amount of oxygen to be converted to energy, the KORR Analyzer measures the oxygen you consume to calculatecalories burned. All of the air exhaled by the patient must be collected to measure oxygen consumption. Two one-way valves in the KORR MetaBreather ensure that only fresh air is inhaled and all exhaled gas passes through the hose and into the machine. A nose-clip ensures that all exhaled air is analyzed.

Preparing for the Test

In order to get the most accurate results, it is important to follow the standard protocol for a Resting Metabolic Rate test:

  1. You should avoid eating 4 hours before the test.
  2. Avoid exercising prior to your test.
  3. If possible, avoid the use of stimulants such as caffeine.

During the Test

During the test you will be invited to sit or recline in a comfortable position. You will be given a KORR MetaBreather mouthpiece to breathe in to. You will be breathing in air from the room, but the gas that you breathe out will go into the metabolic analyzer to measure your metabolic rate.

  1. Relax and close your eyes during the test.
  2. Keep lips sealed lightly around the MetaBreather. It is important that all the air you breathe out is analyzed.
  3. In just 10 minutes, your metabolic rate will be measured!

PFR Solution

Personal Fitness and Rehabilitation was conceived to optimize potential surgical patients who, based on current health status, do not yet meet criteria. After years of refining this concept, our Team identified many opportunities in which to accomplish this goal. By implementing a Functional Medicine model, our clinicians, physical therapists, wellness coaches and Patient Hosts will provide holistic, individualized, and patient-centered care.

We will partner with our patients to customize care based on diagnostic findings using state-of-the-art equipment, including:

  • CardioCoach CO2 Resting Metabolic Rate
  • VO2 testing.

These cutting-edge modalities, coupled with traditional laboratory testing, afford us unique insight into each patient’s individual orthopedic and metabolic identities. We use this data, along with evidence-based interventions including; medical weight management, hormone replacement therapy, to bolster our efforts and support positive outcomes. Our model is designed to guide patients through a 12-week program starting with our Functional Medicine Clinicians. We will perform a comprehensive medical exam, conduct Resting Metabolic Rate testing, check blood work, and implement weight management and nutrition counseling if indicated. Once we have determined that our patients are medically stable, we will transition them to our Physical Therapists where functional movement can be assessed and baselines established.

After baselines have been established, a functional movement screen is performed to standardize movement patterns. This allows our Physical Therapists to communicate effectively with our Wellness Coaches who are certified personal trainers. The goal is to introduce the basics of functional movement to safely allow the patients to reach their exercise and lifestyle goals.

So, what, exactly, does a functional, integrative,
and holistic approach to wellness look like?

In a nutshell, it looks like you.
